The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is offering two free Citizen Firearms Education classes to eligible Sarasota County residents on May 9th and 10th. This class will be conducted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Training Staff from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Gun Range.
 
Eligible applicants must submit to (and complete) a background investigation conducted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). Applicants will be contacted in the order of the responses received (until the class is full) by an SCSO Training Staff member to confirm a spot – please do not call the sheriff’s office to inquire on status or availability. 

In order to be considered for eligibility, applicants must:
  • Be a permanent Sarasota County resident
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid FL driver’s license or government ID
  • Be able to pass an SCSO background check
  • Bring your own firearm, 2 magazines and a holster 
9mm ammunition will be provided for students using a 9mm firearm. Students using other caliber firearms will be required to bring their own ammunition. (150 rounds of ammunition will be required for the class).
 
This course is designed for handguns only, no long guns will be permitted.
 
This class is intended for those who are new to firearms and are looking for a course to help build fundamental knowledge on firearm safety.
