The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the position of Assistant General Counsel. This position is an upper level executive position. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is comprised of nearly 1,000 employees serving a population of over 400,000 citizens. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office currently operates a 1,056 bed jail, an animal services facility and dispatches fire and police services for almost all of the entities within Sarasota County.

This position is responsible for all legal work of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s including but not limited to:
  • Lease Review
  • Mutual Aid agreements
  • Contract Review
  • Civil Forfeiture actions
  • In-Service Training to Law Enforcement and Corrections Deputies
  • Public Speaking engagements on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office
  • Liaison to the Florida Sheriff’s Association
  • Employee disciplinary hearings
  • Review of public records requests
  • Working with the Office of the County Attorney on lawsuits
  • Arguing a variety of motions before the circuit and county court
  • Review and development of internal policies and procedures
  • Working with our Human Resources Bureau on employee issues
  • Other duties as assigned by the General Counsel
The Assistant General Counsel position reports directly to the Senior Assistant General Counsel. The Office of General Counsel is under the supervision of the Office of the Colonel and has two paralegals assigned to it. Preference will be given to applicants who possess both criminal and civil litigation experience and who have prior law enforcement, prosecutorial, correctional experience or experience in labor and employment law. Admission to the Florida Bar with no prior disciplinary action and a minimum of 4 years experience as a Florida attorney are required. This position provides executive leadership, direction, and advice to the Sheriff’s executive staff and the Sheriff. This position requires some travel, extended work hours, background investigation, credit check, criminal history check, fingerprint submission and polygraph examination.
