SCSO Hosts Cold Case Advisory Commission

NEWS RELEASE 24-006 - FEBRUARY 16, 2024

SCSO STAR no background

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) will host the quarterly meeting of the Florida Sheriffs Association's (FSA) Cold Case Advisory Commission on February 21-22, 2024.

The FSA Cold Case Advisory Commission was initiated to assist in investigating cold cases within the state. This commission meets quarterly to discuss strategies and attend presentations of cold homicide investigations submitted to them for review by any Florida state or local agency.

Cold cases are those which remain unsolved and have no active leads being pursued. Many of our Florida sheriff's offices have unsolved homicides and missing persons cases that are open pending additional evidence or information. Attention and resources are often diverted from these cold cases due to limited resources dedicated to more recent crimes. The commission reviews the cases chosen for presentation and advises regarding investigative steps and legal strategy. Additionally, the commission may decide to extend personnel and specialty resources to the presenting agency to assist with solving the case.

SCSO is inviting members of the media to attend a news conference at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, at SCSO headquarters, 6010 Cattleridge Blvd., Sarasota. Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman and Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast will speak about the objectives of the Cold Case Commission meeting and will take questions. We ask that media members arrive by 11:00 a.m. for set up.

Please RSVP to dana.judge@sarasotasheriff.org if you will be attending the press conference.
