The goal of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Cadet Corps is to expose interested high school students to the many functions of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office (SSO), and to familiarize them with the realities of a career in law enforcement. As the Cadets interact with the various employees and units within the SSO, they directly experience what it means to serve others above self, and gain firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing deputies, and the responsibility and compassion required in that role. These positive experiences have influenced many graduates of the Cadet program to serve our community in a variety of career paths within the law enforcement profession.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Cadet Corps is open to high school students in Sarasota County who are interested in a law enforcement career. Meetings are held on Tuesdays during the school year, 6:30-9pm, at the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Headquarters, 6010 Cattleridge Blvd., Sarasota.
There are no fees, costs, or expenses, however, the Cadets are periodically called-upon to assist the Sheriff's Office and other agencies with special events. This “sweat equity” arrangement allows the Cadets to participate and assist Sheriff's Office personnel and other public service entities with in a variety of activities, programs and projects, and to give-back to the community.
The Cadet program adheres to an experiential education philosophy. In addition to the law enforcement-related training, emphasis will be given to teambuilding and other activities designed to develop communication and leadership skills…and sometimes we do things just for fun!
Candidates for the program should be prepared to submit an essay which describes his/her interest in a law enforcement career. A background check will also be completed, and all Cadets must maintain at least a “C” average.
