Mitchell, James

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office charged a Sarasota man after he burglarized a woman’s home and sexually battered her.

Deputies were contacted Sunday night just before 11:00 p.m., to a home in the 3700 block of Maple Hollow Court for the report of a sexual battery. The victim initially made contact with the suspect around 9:00 p.m., when he knocked on her door and asked for a glass of water. The victim refused and the suspect left. The victim was later contacted by a neighbor advising the victim left her garage door open. When the victim went to close her garage door, she was confronted by the suspect inside her bedroom doorway. The suspect forced the victim onto the bed, breaking her knee brace before forcing her to perform oral sex. Just before deputies arrived, the suspect fled the residence and stole the victim’s car.

Detectives began working their investigation and early Monday morning, were contacted again by the victim who reported the suspect returned her vehicle before fleeing on foot. Responding units set up a perimeter to locate the suspect but were unsuccessful. Detectives worked closely with the agency’s Patrol Bureau and Tactical Unit and through surveillance video and witness statements, identified the suspect as 22-year-old James Lamar Mitchell. He was taken into custody Monday evening where he admitted to the burglary and subsequent sexual battery. The 74-year-old victim, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, sustained minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. She and the suspect are not known to one another.

Mitchell, DOB 08/15/97, of 3241 Nature Circle #105, is charged with Sexual Battery, Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling with Battery and Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle. He has no local prior arrests.
