Black, Benjamin

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a Sarasota man Friday on multiple felony charges thanks to the watchful eye of a neighbor who witnessed him commit a home burglary.

Deputies were first alerted to the 2900 block of Hawthorne Street in Sarasota Friday afternoon just before 12:30 p.m., thanks to a watchful citizen who witnessed a man burglarize his neighbor’s home. When deputies arrived, they noticed broken glass and blood on several doors as well as furniture inside the house. Neighbors provided deputies with a description of the suspect and soon deputies observed a man matching the description walk right past the victim’s home. Deputies attempted to make consensual contact with 37-year-old Benjamin Black who resisted and displayed an eight-inch butcher’s knife from underneath his shirt. As deputies attempted to take Black into custody, he tried to remove one of their service weapons however, they soon gained compliance and detained him.

Black, DOB 09/05/80, of 3002 Hawthorne Street, is charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, two counts of Resisting an Officer, Obstruction, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Burglary. He remains in custody today on $52,500 bond. Black has more than two dozen prior arrests in Sarasota County for crimes including Obtaining a Controlled Substance by Fraud, Possession of Synthetic Narcotics, and Burglary.
