Air-1 Assists in Patrol Arrest

NEWS RELEASE 18-089 - APRIL 26, 2018
Jenkins, Drake

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a Sarasota man after he fled from patrol deputies and was located in a nearby wooded area with help from the agency’s Aviation Unit.

Deputies were first alerted to a Wendy’s restaurant in the 8000 block of S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota just after 11:30 p.m., Wednesday night, for reports of a man with a gun. According to the employee, 23-year-old Drake Jenkins approached the drive-thru window on foot, wearing latex gloves while claiming he was waiting for his order. Due to the suspicious circumstances, the employee quickly closed the window and retreated to dial 911, when he saw a black handgun in Jenkins’ hand. Deputies arrived and Jenkins ran on foot, to a wooded area in the 3300 block of Lake Point Blvd. Air-1 quickly responded and located Jenkins beneath the trees. While he was being taken into custody, deputies recovered the gloves, a loaded handgun, and a backpack containing four magazines. Jenkins admitted he does not have a concealed carry permit.

Jenkins, DOB 09/08/94, of 4002 Crockers Lake Blvd., is charged with Loitering and Prowling, Improper Exhibition of a Firearm and Unlicensed Carrying of a Concealed Firearm. He remains in custody today at the Sarasota County Jail on $2,120 bond. Surveillance video from the incident can be viewed on the sheriff’s office YouTube page at www.YouTube.com/SarasotaSheriff.
