Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman is pleased to announce the promotion of Deputy Matt Kostyal to the rank of Sergeant.

Kostyal was hired by the sheriff’s office in November 2014 and assigned to the Patrol Bureau. He then transferred to the Traffic Unit in 2016 and was appointed as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) later that same year.

Kostyal became a Field Training Officer (FTO) with the Traffic Unit, a valued position within the agency, responsible for training and mentoring new deputies. During that time, he also became a certified Breath Test Operator.

Kostyal holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and has continued his education through various trainings, including traffic homicide investigations, and hostage negotiations as well as becoming a certified firearms instructor. Kostyal was nominated for Employee of the Month in the law enforcement division and received a unit citation while assigned to the Traffic Unit.

“It is an honor to see a committed deputy, like Sergeant Kostyal, take on a leadership role,” said Sheriff Hoffman. “We need those who are ready to lead and serve to keep our agency strong.”
