Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight is pleased to announce the promotion of Corrections Sergeant Ivan Nelson.
 
Corrections Sergeant Ivan Nelson is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant assigned to the Courts and Corrections Division. Nelson began his career in 2000 with the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) at the Charlotte County Correctional Institute before earning his corrections certification in 2001. He was hired by the sheriff’s office as a corrections deputy in 2008. Nelson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2015 and has since been instrumental in expanding inmate programs within the Sarasota County Correctional Facility. Throughout his career, he was recognized as the DOC Employee of the Month in 2006 and nominated for the sheriff’s office Courts and Corrections Employee of the Month in 2014. Most recently, Nelson received the Congressional Law Enforcement Award for Dedication and Professionalism in 2019. He is a graduate of FBI-LEEDA’s Supervisors Leadership Institute and has advanced training in defensive tactics, firearms, chemical munitions, CPR instruction, and hostage negotiations. Nelson earned his associate’s degree from Edison Community College and his bachelor’s degree from Southern State College.
