JAIL BOOKING PROCEDURES
|
The Corrections Division is responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates housed at the Sarasota County Jail, and for providing a safe environment for the nearly 300 sworn, certified and civilian staff who work there.
On average, 50-60 people are booked into the jail each day. In June 2009, the Sheriff’s Office adopted a concept called Open Booking, and redesigned the intake area to allow for a more streamlined process. Booking now has 40 chairs of open seating, with eight holding cells for inmates who need to be isolated. The pre-booking area is directly off the expanded sally port and is set up for arresting agencies to complete the required paperwork and perform Intoxilyzer tests on defendants charged with Driving Under the Influence.

Once an arrestee enters the booking area, there is a check for local warrants and a search to determine if charges are pending in locations outside of Sarasota County. Personal belongings are removed and items are logged into property. Then the arrestee is photographed, fingerprinted, a full medical screening is conducted and a Pre-Trial Services interview is completed. The inmate is then escorted upstairs to Pre-Classification housing.
The Booking Section is also responsible for preparing the release of inmates at the conclusion of their sentence. There are about 15-20 releases per shift on average.
