The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 13-year-old Englewood boy for Attempted Murder in the First Degree for a random attack last night.
The victim was jogging near Lemon Avenue and Bayshore Drive around 5:40 p.m., when a teen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt ran up behind him and slashed his neck with a sharp object. The victim tried to pursue the suspect but the boy threw the 15-inch bread knife at him and fled. The victim had a neighbor call for help and was treated at Venice Regional Bayfront Health and released.
The victim was familiar with the suspect and provided deputies with a description of him, his parents and the area in which he lived. Deputies identified the suspect as Damien Reel, DOB 4/17/00, 1723 6th Street, and his family confirmed that he left the house wearing a red sweatshirt shortly before the attack occurred. Another family member said Reel plays with knives and hides them in the area.
Deputies searched for Reel throughout the night and took him into custody at 10:25 this morning.
