Several events are planned to raise awareness about drug abuse, prevention programs and educational efforts during national Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31, 2013.
On Tuesday, the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners will declare Red Ribbon Week and present a proclamation to local stakeholders, including law enforcement, treatment programs, pharmacists and medical providers, who partnered to address drug issues.
On Friday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m., the Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Task Force will hold the 7th Annual Candle Light Vigil at Blalock Park in Venice. The event supports families, brings awareness to substance abuse issues, and educates the community on this growing concern. Lt. Debra Kaspar will discuss what she has seen investigating pharmaceutical drug crimes over the past few years.
And on Saturday, October 26, citizens can turn in expired or unused solid dosage medications for safe disposal during the National Prescription Drug Turn-In Event from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office has permanent drop boxes in its Sarasota and Venice locations, so citizens who can’t come during the event can drop these items off at other times. The Venice Police Department, Sarasota Police Department, North Port Police Department and New College Police Department are also participating.
