The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two south Florida men caught trying to scam a local store out of a truck-load of furniture with a bad check.
Kane’s Furniture, 5252 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, contacted the sheriff’s office just after 5:00 p.m., last night when sales people became suspicious of a pending transaction. Customers had arrived in a U-Haul truck, acted like they were in a hurry and tried to rush the purchase of more than $3,000 worth of furniture.
After separating the men for questioning, deputies determined their stories didn’t match and that they barely knew each other. Jamael Jackson admitted he only had $100 in the bank and that William Simmons had forged his name on the check.
Simmons, DOB 9/23/61, 1408 7th Street, West Palm Beach, is charged with Attempted Grand Theft, Forgery and Conspiracy to Commit Grand Theft. Jackson, DOB 3/15/93, 1148 West 33rd Street, Riviera Beach, is charged with Attempted Grand Theft and Conspiracy to Commit Grand Theft.
Three other females left the store prior to deputies arriving and the investigation is continuing as detectives attempt to identify those suspects. Detectives caution business owners to remain vigilant and cautious of similar activity.
