The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office wants children to enjoy Halloween festivities this week, and offers some reminders to help keep trick-or-treaters safe:
- Wear reflective clothing that is fire resistant and non-binding
- Be sure costumes are cut so children don’t trip and fall
- Trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods
- Trick-or-treat in groups
- Adults should always accompany children
- Carry flashlights after dark and attempt to stay in well-lit areas
- Follow traffic rules, especially when crossing the street at night
- If wearing a mask, make sure eye holes are large enough to see out of
- Parents/guardians should always check candy before it is eaten
Another way to ensure the safety of trick-or-treaters is to attend a public, organized event. Instead of visiting unfamiliar neighborhoods, consider Halloween festivities at churches, malls or events sponsored by local business associations.
