Inmate Meal Cost

In accordance with FSS 951.033, it is the policy of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office to have inmates defray the cost of their incarceration in order to help alleviate the increasing financial burden of housing inmates. All inmates will receive the same level of meal service regardless of their ability to pay.

Inmates will be charged for three (3) trays daily, regardless whether or not they eat. The inmate cost will be $1.50 per day until further notice.

An inmate is considered indigent for meal purposes ONLY if his/her commissary balance is $0

Any portion of meal charge that brings an inmate’s balance below $0 WILL appear as a lien on the account. A meal will be added to $0 balance in form of a lien.

Inmates, to include Florida Department of Corrections Boarders, will be charged for their meals upon entering the facility.

Sentenced working inmates, pre-trial inmates working voluntarily in the kitchen, and Federal Boarders are not charged for meals. Meal charges cease as soon as practical after appropriate documentation is received concerning sentenced and voluntary working inmates.
