                                                                                                             NEWS RELEASE #: 17-048 - FEBRUARY 21, 2017

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a Venice woman for Child Neglect after she fell asleep with an infant in her backseat and later left the child alone while she entered a convenience store.

Deputies were called to the WaWa gas station located at 2970 Executive Drive in Venice around 11:30 p.m., on Saturday night, for reports of a suspicious person. According to a witness, Kathryn Miller, DOB 08/14/86, was seen sleeping behind the wheel of her car while parked at a gas pump. The witness then watched as Miller woke up and entered the business, leaving behind an infant in the back seat. When deputies arrived, they made contact with Miller inside the convenience store and escorted her outside where she admitted to leaving the 1-year-old alone in her car. Deputies spotted marijuana in her center console and upon search of her vehicle, found various amounts of the drug throughout. Miller was arrested and the infant was released to relatives.

Miller, of 246 Snyder Drive, is charged with Child Neglect, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Narcotics Equipment. She was released Sunday on $6,000 bond.
