Man Charged with Aggravated Child Abuse

NEWS RELEASE 17-225 - OCTOBER 18, 2017
Wierzba, Zachary

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Sarasota man early this morning for Aggravated Child Abuse after he turned himself in to detectives.

The investigation began October 3 when detectives were called to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Saint Petersburg to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding a two-month old with a fractured femur. When detectives arrived they spoke with Zachary Wierzba, DOB 05/24/90, who informed them he was caring for the child during the time of the injury. Wierzba initially took the infant to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and gave his account of what happened however, doctors discovered the injuries were inconsistent with his statements. The infant was transported for further diagnoses and a report was filed with the Department of Children and Family Services. A physician with the Child Protection Team determined the infant’s injury was the result of physical abuse.

Wierzba is charged with Aggravated Child Abuse with Great Bodily Harm and is currently held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond.
