Sarasota Man Charged with Sexual Battery

                              NEWS RELEASE #: 17-062 - MARCH 3, 2017

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a man Thursday morning after his DNA connected him with a sexual battery that occurred in Sarasota in May 2016.
Detectives began their investigation on May 22 after receiving a report of a sexual battery at the Cracker Jacks Pub, located at 4116 Bee Ridge Road. The victim told detectives she was approached by 32-year-old Matthew Gormley, the bar's manager, just before 3:00 a.m. Gormley made unwanted sexual advances towards the victim and when she refused his attention, Gormley followed her into the women's restroom where he sexually battered her. The victim was transported to the hospital immediately following the incident while detectives and forensic technicians responded to the bar. Gormley consented to providing a sample of his DNA and on January 26, 2017, investigating detectives received a positive match from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), connecting Gormley to the battery.

Gormley, of 765 Dean Avenue, is charged with Sexual Battery and Kidnapping: False Imprisonment of an Adult. He remains in custody today on 250,000 bond. His prior arrests include Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling and DUI.
