Sarasota County Animal Services has a free spaying and neutering program for your pets. This program is designed for people who are on low or fixed incomes. If you are qualified to receive benefits from other social programs or have a low or fixed income, you probably also qualify for this program.

Where do the funds come from?

Funds for this program have been appropriated in the budget of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Why fund this program?

Thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens are being born each year in Sarasota County. This program is designed to reduce these births, which in turn reduces the operating cost of Animal Services to Sarasota County taxpayers.

Which animals are eligible?

Any dog or cat owned by a Sarasota County resident who meets qualifications established under the program.

Are there any additional costs involved?

It does not cover the cost of a mandatory rabies vaccination and license tag. It does not cover any additional cost of examination fees or vaccination fees that may be required by your veterinarian.

How long will the program be in effect?

Because this program is so popular it is administered on a "first come, first serve" basis and will continue until all the annually appropriated funds have been exhausted. The fiscal year runs October through September.

What is spaying and neutering?

Spaying and neutering are the technical terms for the surgical sterilization of female and male dogs and cats. The procedure is administered under anesthesia by a licensed veterinarian.

Risks are minimal. Animals are fully anesthetized so they feel no pain during the surgery. Recovery period is short.

What are the advantages of sterilization?

Prevention of births of unwanted puppies and kittens. It prevents irritability and aggressiveness. It can increase the lifespan of your pet and has other numerous health benefits. It reduces the urge to roam. It reduces spraying in male cats.
