Colonel Steve Burns

Colonel Steve Burns

Col. Burns is Chief Deputy of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. As such he is second in command of the agency, which he has served since 1981. Col. Burns has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Hodges University. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Command Officer Development Course and the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute’s Chief Executive Seminar. In 2011 he completed the FBI's Florida Executive Development Seminar. He has served his entire career within the Law Enforcement Division, with supervisory and command experience in Patrol, Criminal Investigations and Community Policing.

Major Kurt Hoffman

Major Kurt Hoffman

Maj. Hoffman is the Administrative Division Commander and General Counsel for the Sheriff’s Office. He has spent more than 20 years working in the criminal justice system. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo College, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from International College and a Juris Doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University. A former State Prosecutor, he is a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s Police Legal Advisors Training Program and a member of the Florida Bar’s Labor and Employment Law, and City, County and Local Government Law sections. In 2011 he completed the FBI's Florida Executive Development Seminar and in 2014 graduated from the FBI National Academy, during which time he also earned a Graduate Certificate in Leadership from the University of Virginia.

Major Jeff Bell

Major Jeff Bell

Major Jeffrey Bell is Courts and Corrections Division Commander. He is a 30-year veteran of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, beginning his career in 1983. Bell has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Ferris State University and a Master Public Administration from the University of South Florida. He is also a graduate of the Administrative Officer's Management Program at North Carolina State University. Bell serves on the Board of Directors of Children First, SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center), and is a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast. 

 

 

Major Paul Richard

Major Paul Richard

Major Paul Richard is the Law Enforcement Division Commander. He is a 25-year veteran of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, beginning his career in 1988. Richard has a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of South Florida. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute's Command Officers Development Course and the inaugural class of The Florida Sheriffs Institute Commanders Academy.

Wendy Rose

Wendy Rose

Wendy Rose joined the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office in 2009 as Community Affairs Manager, and as such, also serves as the agency’s Media Liaison. Ms. Rose has more than 20 years of experience in television news and media relations. Her community affairs experience includes being part of a consumer investigative team and creating numerous public awareness campaigns. Ms. Rose has a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from the University of South Florida and a graduate certificate in Criminal Justice from American Public University.

Bill Spitler

Bill Spitler

Bill Spitler is the Director of Research & Planning, a position created by Sheriff Knight in 2013 to manage large projects including the new Sarasota County Sheriff's Office headquarters facility, Emergency Operations Center design and construction, dispatch consolidation, the homeless facility and other such issues. Spitler began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Sarasota Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Captain. He joined the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office shortly after his retirement from SPD and brought his many years of experience, local knowledge and community ties to Patrol. Spitler has a bachelor's degree in Forensic Studies from Indiana University.
